Andy Burnham announces pay rise for train drivers amid union pressure
Andy Burnham has been accused of capitulating to militant unions by handing train drivers a bumper pay rise, reports BritPanorama. The Prime Minister has signed off on an inflation-busting 3.6 per cent increase to avert strikes on the Avanti service that takes him back to Manchester.
The Aslef union had previously rejected an offer and threatened industrial action. Under the new deal, Avanti drivers, who start with salaries of £70,000, will be able to earn more for working weekends, according to the Sunday Times. In return, the union has agreed to accept rotas digitally rather than on paper.
Criticism has arisen from multiple quarters, with Shadow Transport Secretary Richard Holden stating, “Andy Burnham has caved to union power.” He added that Labour has already “handed over billions with no strings attached,” leading to a decline in services and an increased burden on taxpayers. This settlement, he argues, exacerbates an already challenging situation.
The Avanti West Coast has consistently ranked as the worst-performing train company in the UK. Following the announcement, the Department for Transport indicated that this deal will help avoid highly disruptive bank holiday strike action, reduce short-term cancellations, and modernise work practices.
Further complicating matters, accounts reveal that Aslef donated more than £300,000 to the Labour Party in 2024, raising questions about the influence of union financing on governmental decisions.
