Nicky Butt banned from local recycling centre over vehicle dispute
Manchester United legend Nicky Butt has claimed he has been banned from his local recycling centre following an extraordinary row with staff over his Range Rover, reports BritPanorama.
The former England midfielder stated that the confrontation arose when he attempted to dispose of household rubbish, only to be informed that his vehicle was deemed commercial due to the rear seats being folded down.
Butt, who secured six Premier League titles during his prestigious career at Old Trafford, expressed his frustration with the situation on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, noting that an attendant initially halted his entry into the facility.
According to Butt, after he arrived at the recycling centre with rubbish from his home, he was confronted by a staff member who demanded to inspect the contents of his car. “What for?” Butt responded, having just come from his residence where he had amassed several bags of waste after missing a collection. “I’ve got a lot of crap from the house, bit of cardboard… I missed the bin man last week, so I’ve got a few smelly bags,” he recalled.
The situation escalated when the attendant questioned the tinted windows of Butt’s Range Rover, suggesting they were an attempt to hide the items being disposed of. Despite this, Butt chose not to back down, proceeding into the recycling centre in Altrincham to dispose of his waste.
As he drove further into the facility, Butt claimed that the attendant attempted to follow him while communicating with colleagues through a walkie-talkie. “I thought, well, I’m there now, I’m gonna go for it,” he recalled, stating he continued up the ramp despite the ongoing confrontation.
Ultimately, Butt successfully disposed of his rubbish, but the incident concluded with him being banned from the facility. This unusual conflict stands out in the post-football landscape for one of Manchester United’s most notable players.
During his career, Butt emerged from the famed Class of ’92 at Manchester United alongside other legends like David Beckham and Paul Scholes. He accumulated six Premier League titles, three FA Cups, and a Champions League trophy before moving on from United in 2004, following a stint at Newcastle. His later roles included coaching and administration in football, notably serving as chief executive of Salford City until 2024.
