The rerun will take place on Friday morning, resulting in Scotland’s Melaine Woods having her gold medal stripped. Woods had crossed the line with a new Games record prior to the decision.
Canada’s Nandini Sharma, who finished second, has been disqualified for obstruction after her team’s appeal was rejected. The jury of appeal took action following successful challenges from Team Australia and Team Mauritius, both of whose athletes were involved in the incident.
All results from Wednesday’s race have been voided, including the silver medal awarded to England’s Ellis Kottas after Sharma’s disqualification. The chaos took place mere moments after the start, as Mauritius’s Noemi Alphonse collided with Australia’s Eliza Ault-Connell on the opening bend, sending Alphonse crashing to the track.
Ault-Connell remained in her racing chair but lost control amid the confusion, colliding with another competitor, while a fourth athlete was forced off the track entirely, crashing into advertising boards. With the field thinned, Woods and Sharma found themselves leading the race before Woods ultimately surged ahead to win.
Following the successful appeals, Team England expressed disappointment over the decision, with chef de mission Jonny Riall stating: “While there is no formal protest process available to us, we have strongly challenged the decision. The race officials did not halt the race at the time of the incident, nor was any immediate decision made to declare the race void or order a rerun.”
