Labour’s plan to stop small boat crossings is working, Andy Burnham has insisted despite a fresh influx, reports BritPanorama.
In a recent statement, Prime Minister Andy Burnham acknowledged the ongoing challenges related to small boat crossings but emphasized a significant reduction in numbers compared to the previous year. Burnham highlighted that 13,007 migrants have made the perilous journey from France this year, marking a 45% decrease from 2025.
However, a recent heatwave has caused a spike in crossings, with nearly 900 departing from French beaches during Burnham’s first week in office. In response to this increase, he asserted that the Home Secretary has implemented a rigorous plan aimed at managing the crisis. “The numbers can fluctuate but, overall, boat crossings are down—down quite significantly year on year,” Burnham stated.
Despite these improvements, Burnham acknowledged that the public demands stronger control. “While we’ve made progress, there is more to do, and I recognize that completely.” He stressed the need for illegal migrants to undergo all necessary checks, expressing concerns about potential national security threats from hostile states possibly using these crossings to smuggle in spies.
To address this issue, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has established a new agreement with French authorities aimed at curbing the flow of crossings from their beaches. Despite the efforts, critics argue that the situation remains grave; Tory Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp condemned the current measures, claiming it was evident that French authorities were not doing enough to halt migrant boats, even accusing them of assisting migrants.
UK taxpayers have contributed over £1 billion to help France stop the boats, yet results have been limited, raising questions about the effectiveness of the measures in place. The ongoing situation remains complex, with changes in migrant numbers influenced by a variety of factors, including weather conditions.
