Keir Starmer steps down as Prime Minister
Sir Keir Starmer stepped down as Prime Minister and made his way to a local pub in Kentish Town for a drink with supporters shortly after facilitating a transition of power to Andy Burnham, reports BritPanorama.
Starmer, flanked by loyalists including former Chancellor Rachel Reeves, was seen enjoying a pint while celebrating with friends. This informal gathering followed a brief goodbye speech delivered outside Downing Street, which concluded with a visit to Buckingham Palace to formally resign to King Charles, thus marking the end of his two years in office.
In his farewell address, Starmer expressed that serving as Prime Minister was “the privilege of my life,” and acknowledged the transformation of the Labour Party from its 2019 election defeat to a landslide victory in 2024. He stated: “My work is done.”
The former Prime Minister reflected on what he characterised as an improved Britain, citing achievements such as a stronger economy, reduced NHS waiting lists, lower immigration, and increased defence spending. The speech lasted less than five minutes, concluding with Starmer’s gratitude towards his family, staff, and the British people, affirming, “I go with good grace. I go with a smile, and I go proud of everything that we have achieved.”
Within an hour of Starmer’s departure, Burnham was invited to form a government, returning to Downing Street as the new Prime Minister. Starmer’s administration was noted for restoring stability after years of Conservative governance, although it faced significant challenges, particularly in the wake of recent local election losses which intensified pressures for leadership change among Labour MPs.
