Russia launched a major combined air attack on Ukraine early Monday, firing 68 missiles and 351 drones in a coordinated strike that killed at least 14 people and wounded 46 others, Ukrainian authorities said. The assault, one of the largest of the war, came days before a scheduled NATO summit and primarily targeted the capital Kyiv and surrounding regions.
Attack details
According to the Kyiv City Military Administration, Russian forces used a range of weaponry, including six Zircon hypersonic anti-ship missiles, 23 Iskander-M ballistic missiles, 33 Kh-101 cruise missiles, and 351 attack drones. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted none of the ballistic missiles, underscoring an acute shortage of modern long-range air defense systems such as Patriot or SAMP/T batteries.
In Kyiv, direct hits were recorded in four districts. In the Podil district, a nine-story residential building was struck between the fifth and ninth floors, causing partial collapse. Fires broke out at four separate addresses, and a garage cooperative was damaged. In the Darnytskyi district, a 25-story building was hit at the fourth floor, and a 30-story tower saw a large fire on the 23rd and 24th floors. In the Holosiivskyi district, a fire engulfed the historic Roshen factory building from the first to fourth floors, and a five-story residential building was also damaged. In the Obolon district, warehouse and non-residential buildings were hit.
Civilian infrastructure hit
In Kyiv region, private homes were destroyed in Bucha, Vyshhorod, and Brovary districts. Damage to railway infrastructure forced Ukrzaliznytsia, the national railway operator, to reroute several passenger trains, causing delays. Search and rescue operations continued through the morning, with authorities warning that the casualty toll could rise.
The attack came just days before the NATO summit, where alliance leaders are expected to discuss further military support for Ukraine. Ukrainian officials have long warned that delays in delivering advanced air defense systems directly enable Russian strikes on civilian infrastructure.
Monday’s assault is the latest in a series of large-scale bombardments that have devastated Ukrainian cities, as Russian ground forces have made only marginal territorial gains on the front lines.
