Harry Maguire negotiates podcast role with Gary Lineker, includes escape clause for World Cup

Harry Maguire left out of England’s World Cup squad

Harry Maguire will not be representing England at this summer’s World Cup, but he will still be part of the action in a rather different way, reports BritPanorama.

The Manchester United defender was left stunned after Thomas Tuchel omitted him from the 26-man squad, with Dan Burn, Djed Spence, and Jarell Quansah receiving selection instead.

This decision has reportedly left Maguire and his family outraged. Meanwhile, he has secured a role on Gary Lineker’s ‘The Rest is Football’ podcast, appearing alongside Alan Shearer and Micah Richards.

Lineker revealed that the podcast arrangement was established some time ago when Maguire was struggling for regular play at Old Trafford. In a discussion with talkSPORT, he explained that the deal was made while Maguire was “really out of the picture completely.”

Despite his current exclusion from the England setup, Maguire reportedly requested a get-out clause in his contract for the podcast, in case he earned a call-up to Tuchel’s World Cup squad. Lineker recalled his initial scepticism towards this request, given Maguire’s diminished role at Manchester United.

“I thought to myself: ‘You really don’t need that clause. If you’re picked, you’re going to be fine with it. Don’t worry about it,'” Lineker mentioned. As it would turn out, that clause was never needed as Maguire did not make the final cut.

Lineker expressed his belief that Maguire has been unfairly treated regarding this selection. “I think he’s been really unlucky, actually, not to make the squad. I’m genuinely disappointed for him, given his experience as well. He’s never let England down,” he stated, adding that he felt Dan Burn was less deserving of a spot in comparison.

In the competitive world of football, choices are often questioned and debated, a reminder that the intersection of loyalty and performance peaks in defining moments. Will Maguire’s contribution off the pitch overshadow his absence on it, or will the decision fade amid the tournament’s unfolding drama?
