Kemi Badenoch criticises Keir Starmer over Mandelson's £75,000 severance despite alleged dishonesty

Starmer criticized for awarding severance payment to Mandelson

Sir Keir Starmer is facing significant backlash from Conservative members for awarding a £75,000 severance payout to Lord Mandelson, despite having stated that the peer lied to him, reports BritPanorama.

Prime Minister Starmer has been condemned by Kemi Badenoch regarding the payment, which follows revelations about Mandelson’s connections to Jeffrey Epstein. The financial settlement was issued after Lord Mandelson’s dismissal from his ambassadorial role in Washington, DC, where he had initially requested over £500,000.

Concerns had been flagged to the Prime Minister in a “due diligence” report, yet he proceeded with the appointment. Badenoch, speaking during a visit to Wembley, emphasized that if Starmer asserts Mandelson was dishonest, then granting a severance payment seems inappropriate. “Something very dodgy has happened,” she stated.

Badenoch further indicated that pertinent information is missing from the documentation associated with the appointment. Following the release of a 147-page dossier, she noted the absence of Starmer’s comments on cover notes, which typically outline decision-making processes.

Lord Mandelson has repeatedly claimed he did not deceive Number 10 about his associations with Epstein, supporting his case against allegations of misconduct. A senior minister recently characterized the payout as “value for money,” clarifying that the initial £547,000 demand had been successfully negotiated down.

Nick Thomas-Symonds acknowledged that a due diligence report revealed serious questions concerning Mandelson’s past, particularly his continued association with Epstein. Despite Mandelson denying any wrongdoing, an ongoing investigation into his conduct remains active following his arrest in February.

This situation highlights the tension within Starmer’s leadership and raises questions about the accountability of politicians regarding the individuals they appoint and the consequences of those choices.

Many observers will be watching how this unfolds, as it underscores broader concerns about transparency and the ethical implications of political appointments in the UK’s governance landscape.
